Kurz vor Start der diesjährigen Hochzeitssaison ergab sich für mich die Chance nochmal richtig viel Inspiration und Information zu tanken. Es ging für einen zweitägigen Workshop nach Birmingham zu Davina + Daniel aus Montreal.
Nur mal kurz ein bisschen was zu Davina Palik und Daniel Kudish, damit ihr wisst von wem ich rede. Die beiden gehören für mich seit ein paar Jahren zu meinen grossen Vorbildern und sind unumstritten zwei der weltweit besten photojournalistisch geprägten Hochzeitsfotografen. Sowohl deren Reportagebilder als auch die kreativen Portraits sind der Hammer und verblüffen mich immer wieder von neuem. Beide sind regelmässig unter den Top 20 der ISPWP-Wettbewerbe zu finden. Daniel hat im letzten ISPWP-Contest den ersten Platz als „photographer of the quartal“ belegt, den Davina bereits vor ihm auch schon gewann. Zuletzt wurde Daniel dann noch als fearless photographer of the year ausgezeichnet. Also die zwei wissen von was sie schwätze.
So war es für mich dann klar, als die beiden einen Workshop in Europa ankündigten, dass ich da dabei sein muss.
Und es war fantastisch. Beide sind nicht nur tolle Fotografen sondern auch tolle und sehr liebevolle Menschen, die man am liebsten nur knuddeln mag. Aber es sollte ja in erster Linie ums fotografieren gehen. Schlaf habe ich in den drei Tagen in Birmingham nicht viel gefunden, da meine Gedanken ständig kreisten und schwirrten und kreisten und schwirrten…
Es gab keine Geheimnisse in diesen zwei Tagen. Davina und Daniel erzählten uns alles über ihr Business über Shooting, Reportage, Licht und Bildbearbeitung. Sehr wertvoll war für mich auch, dass sie uns einiges über die Geschichten hinter ihren Bildern erzählten und eine sehr offene Portfolio-Kritik unser eigenen Bildern durchführten. Diese mehrstündige Kritik hat mir meine Augen geöffnet und mir aufgezeigt, wo ich Fehler gemacht habe und wo ich mich verbessern muss und mich einfach darin geschult, wie Bilder zu betrachten sind. Auch das live shooting und insbesondere deren Gedankenprozess dahinter war eine tolle Erfahrung.
Ein toller Bonus war natürlich noch, dass man weitere tolle Fotografen aus ganz Europa kennengelernt hat.
Wer die Chance bekommt, einen Workshop der beiden zu besuchen, der sollte sich diese Erfahrung nicht entgehen lassen. Ich hoffe sehr, dass ein wenig dieses Talents in diesen zwei Tagen auf mich übergeschwappt ist.

Shortly before the start of this year’s wedding season I had the opportunity to fill up my mind with a lot of more inspiration and information. I went for a two day workshop to Birmingham with Davina + Daniel from Montreal.
First let me introduce you to Davina Palik and Daniel Kudish, so that you know who I’m talking about. Davina and Daniel are one of my biggest heroes in the wedding industry and they are unquestionably two of the world’s best photojournalistic wedding photographers. Both the photojournalistic images and the creative portraits are awesome and amaze me again and again. Both are regularly found among the top 20 in the ISPWP competitions. Daniel has in the recent ISPWP contest took the first place as the “photographer of the Quarter,” that Davina before has already won. Recently Daniel was still honored as “Fearless photographer of the year”. So they know what they are talking about.
As they announced a workshop in Europe, it was clear to me that I have to be there.
And it was a fantastic experience. Both are not only great photographers they are also great and loving people you want to hug. I don’t get a lot of sleep in the three days in Birmingham because my mind was constantly spinning around and around and around…..
There were no secrets in these two days. Davina and Daniel told us everything about their business about shooting, lighting and photo editing. Very valuable for me was that they told us a lot about the stories behind their images and that they made a very open portfolio critique of our own images. These several hours-criticism has opened my eyes and showed me a new way to look at pictures. Now I knew where I have made mistakes and where I need to improve myself. Even the live shooting and especially their thought process behind the shooting was a very valuable experience.
If you ever get the chance to attend a workshop of Davina + Daniel, don’t miss this chance. I hope that a little of this talent has spilled over to me in these two days.
